Balanced Attack Leads Eagles
Four girls in double-figures propel Edison to easy victory over Langley
The Edison girls varsity basketball team trounced the visiting Langley Saxons, 71-45, Friday night. The Eagles were lead by their balanced scoring effort with four of their players in double-figures. Ruth Sherill led the way with 18 points, with Christine Dua (16), Krystyna Watts (14) and Kierra Graham (14) following closely behind.
"Even though we won tonight I never underestimate any team before a game," said Eagles Coach Dianne Lewis, "We played well but there are still some things that we could have done better."
The Eagles came out to start the game like a team on a mission, going 8-for-19 from the field while holding the Saxons to only seven shots enroute to a 19-6 first-quarter lead.
"We came out cold in the first quarter," said Saxon Coach Tim Anderson, "They played really good defense but we were able to rebound in the second quarter and cut into their lead a little bit."
The Saxons came out hot in the second quarter, hitting their first five shots and outscoring the Eagles 10-2 to cut the deficit to five, but then the Eagles begin to heat up as freshman Brittany Allen hit two triples, and Senior Kierra Graham added another one to push the lead back to double digits snuffing out a mini run by the Saxons as the two teams headed into halftime with the Eagles up 34-20.
"We had a good game plan tonight and we were able to come out and play well," said Eagles junior Ruth Sherrill, who led all players with 19 points and 11 rebounds, "We knew it would not be an easy game and they played us hard."
After the half, the cold shooting returned for the Saxons as the Eagles ran off some quick points before the Saxons were able to get back into the game as both teams scored 11 points in the quarter and the thrid quarter ended with the Eagles still up by 14.
"We have a good team here," Lewis said. "Four returning players from last years squad, plus we are heavy with upperclassmen so the leadership is there all we have to do is focus a little more on defense and we should be okay."
And focus is what the Eagles did as they outscored the Saxons 26-14 in the fourth quarter to pull away and win the game.
"I am happy for my stats tonight but this is a team game and I could not have done what I did without them," said Sherrill.
Sophomore Grace Goettman led the Saxon with 15 points, while Junior Catie Chaudhry led them with seven rebounds.
Sherrill was not the only Eagles player with a good game tonight as Eagles Junior Christine Dua chipped in with 16 points and Junior Asia Wilson added 10 rebounds.
"Despite the loss we did not play that bad," said Anderson, "We were able to force some turnovers and we battled hard all night. All we can do is learn from this and get better down the road."
