After learning about bike safety this week, more than 100 Chesterbrook Academy summer campers raised funds through a Trike-a-Thon to benefit St. Jude's Children’s Research Hospital on Wednesday.
"We're very excited about it," said Principal Tiffany Weatherford-Jackson. "We figured a Trike-a-Thon would be really good for the kids."
Kids ages 2 to 10 earned donations for each lap they completed on bicycles around the parking lot of the school. Weatherford-Jackson said their goal was to raise $1,000 and as of Wednesday morning, they had already surpassed that amount and expect to receive more.
"I think it was an excellent turn-out, especially for the first year," said Weatherford-Jackson. "We didn't know what to expect."
She added that they plan to hold a similar event next year.
The school currently enrolls 175 children ages six weeks through 12. Most of the summer campers are also enrolled during the school year, however Weatherford-Jackson said that some of the older kids only enroll in the summer program.
Donations are being accepted until Thursday at 6:30 p.m. To make a donation, please contact Chesterbrook Academy at (703) 921-9600.
