The preliminary design stage of a construction project on a portion of Telegraph Road is mostly complete, and the full project is expected to be completed by September 2015, said Khalid Gandhi, project manager.
This project features improvements along the 0.2 mile strip of Telegraph Road between South Van Dorn Street and South Kings Highway. The construction will also include reconstruction to the Huntley Meadows Park entrance and parking lot on South Kings Highway.
Gandhi said Washington Gas has relocated the new line for the project and work on other utilities will be completed by the end of April. As for traffic, the work on the remaining overhead utility lines should not be too much of a hassle for motorists for the next month.
A lot of the equipment for the project is located in front of a home on Telegraph Road. Gandhi said VDOT has acquired the necessary permits for use of the land and they have agreed to restore it back to its original state once the project is complete. Currently, no one resides in the home and Gandhi said the property is under foreclosure.
The project is expected to improve conditions for motorists using Telegraph Road to get to I-495. VDOT is designing and constructing the project but it is being funded by Fairfax County — which allocated $10 million for the features of the project.
