The Edison Eagles girls basketball team kicked off the new year in style, trouncing the Stuart Raiders 61-9.
Edison opened the game with a 9-0 run in the first period, overpowering the Stuart starters with their size and speed. Senior Krystyna Watts then widened the gap with a long 3-pointer to extend the Eagles lead to 12 points. Little did they know they wouldn't have to score the rest of the game.
"We're working on boxing out, running our secondary fast break and defensively trying to deny the ball on the wings," said Edison Coach Dianne Lewis. "It looked good tonight but we have to make sure we're doing it every single time."
To start the second quarter, Angie McCaffrey gave the Raiders a spark by draining a 3-pointer. The Eagles then kept the Raiders scoreless until 2 minutes left in the half and went into the locker room up 26 - 9.
Eagles senior Krystyna Watts opened the third quarter with a wide open triple that seemed to suck the life out of the Raider fans. The Eagles would then go on a 20-0 run to end to put the game away. Despite the scoreboard, the Lady Raiders kept hustling and never hung their heads in defeat.
"We're rebuilding the program, so I told them you rebuild with heart and hustle," said first-year Stuart Coach Thomas Gaffney.
Edison's Ruth Sherrill controlled the boards and ended the game with 24 points and 12 rebounds. Averi Collins also notched a double-double, going for 16 and 11.
