Edison Girls Defeat Hayfield 53-40
Ruth Sherrill led all scorers with 16 points as Edison upped its record to 8-4 on the season.
The Edison Eagles beat the Hayfield Hawks 53-40 in girls varsity basketball action on Monday night in front of a spirited crowd that wasn’t deterred by the season’s first snowfall.
The win upped the Eagles record to 8-4 on the season and gave them their third consecutive “Bird Bowl” victory over the rival Hawks, who fell to 3-9 on the season.
The Eagles raced out to an early advantage but the Hawks trimmed the lead to 24-23 at the half. In the second half, the Hawks briefly took the lead, but Edison took control midway through the third quarter, behind strong play from the Sherrill sisters, Ruth and Sheila, who finished with 16 and 10 points respectively.
The margin was only 6 points at the start of the fourth quarter, but the Eagles pulled away on the strength of tenacious defense and good outside shooting to win going away. Hayfield was led by senior Lindsey Chester, who scored 13 points, and freshman Raven Lott, who scored 10. Hayfield will have a shot at revenge on their home court on February 3.
