Jason Howell, an Arlington resident running as an independent candidate in 8th Congressional District, took to the stage earlier this month to deliver his message in a unique way.

Howell, who is challenging incumbent Democratic U.S. Rep. Jim Moran and Republican Patrick Murray, performed last week during open mic night at IOTA. Howell performed "Congress-Man," a composition inspired by — and to the tune of — Elton John's "Rocket Man."

Howell said in an email to Patch that this was one of the ways he was trying to reach people who have otherwise been disengaged from politics.

"My roots in the community begin with live, local music in the early 1990s. Music is independent of party and musicians can be the philosophers of our time. The message I am sending through this event is: I'm approachable, relatable and interested in hearing from all voices in the community. Not everyone is interested in politics but Politicians are elected to represent all people. This is one way to reach those who are typically ignored," Howell stated in a news release announcing the performance.
