The 2001 merger with Time Warner (five years earlier) is said to have led to a $200 Billion loss in market value. Maybe you should blame Senator George Allen who was in office from 2001-2007 during the heart of AOL's decline. Or perhaps the cause of AOL-Time Warner's decline had little to do with the politicians at the time and was rather due to a lack of foresight to the changes in internet communication and commerce, or maybe the difficulties of merging a subscription-based internet company with an "old media" empire during the rise of Google and all other manner of free internet media.
