Mail-in Ballot Deadline Extended
Hurricane Sandy has delayed postal mail and closed the Office of Elections.
The Fairfax County Office of Elections will be closed Tuesday, so the mail-in deadline has been extended because of Hurricane Sandy. Any applications received Wednesday, Oct. 31 — or when the office reopens — will be considered received on time due to emergency situations based on Virginia Code when an officials office is closed, according to the Fairfax County Emergency Information Blog.
No mail was delivered Monday, and mail will not be delivered Tuesday, Oct. 30. The statutory deadline for mail-in was originally Tuesday, Oct. 30; this deadline still applies for applications sent by fax to 703-324-3725 or e-mail to absenteeballot@fairfaxcounty.gov.
Absentee voting has been canceled for Tuesday, Oct. 30.

It sounds like the deadline to request an absentee ballot has been extended. Any absentee ballots that are marked and then sent in by mail must still be received no later than November 6. Is that correct?

We're working on a story now about how Sandy is affecting the elections, including absentee voting. More to come this afternoon!

The deadline to request a mail-in absentee ballot has now passed. Those who are uncertain of their availability to vote on Nov. 6 should cast an in-person absentee ballot. Hours at the North County Government Services Building on Cameron Glen in Reston have been expanded, noon - 8pm on weekdays, 8am-5pm Saturday. Other satellite locations have similar hours. The Fairfax County Government Center will take in-person absentee votes from 8am-8pm on weekdays. http://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/elections/absentee.htm
