(Editor's note: An earlier version of this story notes that the incident took place in Alexandria, per a release from WMATA; the incident actually took place in Fairfax County.)
In what is considered standard procedure, a Metro Transit Police officer has been placed on administrative leave with pay Saturday after he shot at a car thief suspect earlier in the day in a shopping center parking lot off of Van Dorn Street in Kingstowne, according to Metro WMATA spokeswoman Caroline Lukas.
Witnesses saw the Metro Transit Police officer shoot at the car thief as he made his escape, she said. The Metro Transit officer shot at the suspect as the officer was being dragged by the car, Lukas said. "The shell was recovered at the scene," she said.
The hunt was still on for the suspect Saturday afternoon and has involved police from Metro Transit, Fairfax County and the City of Alexandria.
