UPDATE: Police Investigate Fatal Crash Involving Alexandria Man

Jeffrey Woods crashed his car into a police cruiser near Thomas Edison High School and died on the scene.

Police have identified the victim as Jeffrey M. Woods, 52, from Alexandria. 

The investigation also revealed that a nearby motorist heard the crash and assisted the police officer with getting out of the car.

UPDATE 9:30 a.m.: Fairfax County Police Department has reopened Franconia Road and towed away the cars involved in the early-morning crash.

A fatal accident has closed down Franconia Road Monday morning and delays are expected while Fairfax County police investigate the accident, according to WTOP.

A man ran his car head-on into a police cruiser at about 3 a.m., WTOP reports. The man died and police have not yet released his identity.

The man's car was heading west and hit the police car, which was heading east, responding to an emergency, according to NBC4. The collision caused a fire and the police officer radioed for help, NBC4 reported.

The policeman involved in the accident was sent to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
