UPDATE: Police ID Man Involved in Fatal Shooting by Police

A man wanted on multiple child pornography charges was shot in a Springfield apartment.

Update: Police say the man killed in the shooting was 22-year-old Gray Alan Combs. Combs did not have a fixed address, according to FCPD.

A Fairfax County Police Officer was involved in the shooting of a wanted man in an apartment on Backlick Road late Saturday night.

A resident called police to the 5700 block of Backlick Road just after 11 p.m. Saturday reporting that a person wanted by police was hiding in a bedroom in an apartment.

According to an FCPD media release sent just before noon Sunday, “While searching the residence, patrol officers and a K9 team encountered the suspect, who threatened them with a sword and failed to comply with their commands. The officers fired both less-lethal bean bag rounds and lethal rounds, striking the suspect, who fell to the ground. Officers immediately rendered medical aid and performed CPR. The suspect was transported to the hospital and died a short time later.”

This was the second night police had dealt with this suspect. Friday night, the suspect gave officers false identification and escaped on foot after a brief chase. Friday night’s incident resulted in additional charges for the suspect.

Prior to Friday night, the suspect had seven warrants for his arrest outstanding, according to police. The warrants were for three felony counts for producing child pornography, another three for possessing or reproducing child pornography with an intent to distribute, and one misdemeanor warrant for consensual sexual intercourse with a minor.

The officer, who has not been identified, is on administrative leave — standard procedure following this type of event. Police will not release the suspect’s name until next-of-kin are notified.

I normally am saddened at any loss of human life, but those that prey on children are not at a human level to warrant sadness. Thank you FCPD for putting your lives on the line to protect us in Springfield, the children, and the community at large; and also saving the taxpayer bill to have to put this predator on trial.

Hoping the children harmed by this person are found and able to receive counseling/support. If you knew Gray and are a victim of his, yes, a victim, blaming yourself is a common but wrong reaction when you have been sexually or otherwise abused, please reach out to your family, counselors at school or contact crime stoppers for help.
Thank you FCPD for your work to protect our young and old.
