Rose Hill, Franconia: Worse Commutes than Most Small Communities

Area ranked in 90th percentiles for longest commutes among areas with populations of 10,000 - 50,000.

Stuck in traffic a lot? You're not alone. It takes Rose Hill, Franconia and Springfield residents longer to get to work than at least 91 percent of residents in similarly sized communities in America, according to a new study.

The study, done by On Numbers, a Bizjournals.com blog, compiled data from the U.S. Census Bureau's 2009 American Community Survey. It awarded points for every commuter who takes less than 30 minutes to get from home to his or her job, and it took away points for every commuter above that threshold.

Among 3,012 cities, villages, incorporated towns and census-designated places with populations between 10,000 and 50,000:

  • Rose Hill ranked 2,797 (92nd percentile)
  • Franconia ranked 2,927 (97th percentile)
  • Newington ranked 2,882 (95th percentile)
  • Springfield ranked 2.744 (91st percentile)

In Rose Hill, 13.5 percent of workers have a commuting time of 14 minutes or less. Almost 26 percent of workers have a commuting time of 45 minutes or more.

Nationally, just 15.5 percent of workers commute 45 minutes or more.

In Franconia, 9.7 percent of workers commuted 14 minutes or less and 30.4 percent commute 45 minutes or more.

In Newington, 15.1 percent of workers commute 14 minutes or less and 30.4 percent commute 45 minutes or more.

And in Springfield, 14.3 percent of workers commuted 14 minutes or less and 23.1 percent commute 45 minutes or more.

Kingstowne was not included in the small community rankings.

The best commute in America for small communities was in Altus, Okla., where it takes 80.5 percent of working residents less than 15 minutes to drive to work from home. The national average is 28.7 percent. Very few people in Altus have long commutes: 1.5 percent of the workforce there commutes more than 45 minutes every morning.
