Bikers say event energizes them about commute.

While the Washington metropolitan area is famous for its car-choked commutes, some people gathered in the Kingstowne area on Friday morning to prove that it's possible to bike to work. The riders were participating in Bike-to-Work Day, an event organized locally by the Washington Area Bicyclist Association and Commuter Connections. The event promotes using bikes to commute to work. On Friday, 12,700 people were expected to participate in Bike-to-Work Day in the Washington metro area, the Washington Business Journal reports.  At a Kingstowne area rest stop on Walker Lane, near the Inova Healthplex, bikers stopped to enjoy refreshments and share stories. Home for the Family

Pool + Trampoline + Tire Swing + Hot Tub = The Perfect Family Home just west of Kingstowne.

Jesse and Jill Vaugh may have been destined to make 6136 Burnett St. their family home. Jesse first spied the large house in 2006, while driving through the Rose Hill neighborhood with Jill’s brother. Jesse had been transferred from northern New York to the Washington area for his job with a resort company, and was staying with Jill’s brother while looking for a rental home so Jill and their four children could join him. “When Jesse saw the [Burnett Street] house, he turned to my brother and said, ‘Look at that house. Wouldn’t that be a great house to live in some day?’” said Jill, recounting the tale her husband later told her.  A few months later, after joining Jesse in Washington, Jill saw the same house, unaware that Jesse had also …

Dominion Customers May See Cheaper Bill This Fall

Monthly electric charges could drop to an average of $105 per household by September.

Gas prices may be going up and up, but cost of electricity, at least for Dominion customers, is dropping. The average household electricity bill is expected to drop to $105.90 in September, the company says, a 5.7 percent decrease from January 2012. The calculation is based on the an average use of 1,000 kilowatt-hours. The drop is owed largely to a decrease in Dominion's fuel rate. The proposed fuel rate is 2.706 cents per kilowatt-hour – a decrease of approximately 18 percent from the current fuel rate of 3.289 cents per kilowatt-hour, said Dominion spokeswoman Le-Ha Anderson. The adjustment is the lowest the company has proposed since 2007, Anderson said. It will result in an annual fuel revenue reduction of $388 million. In a company …

Supervisors Move to Expedite Changes to Wegmans Site

Plan changes add a mezzanine to a building at the shopping center, change site's permitted uses.

The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors Tuesday took action to speed up the approval of proposed changes to the Hilltop Village Center, the future site of Kingstowne's Wegmans. Developers proposed changes that would add a mezzanine to one of the buildings at the shopping center and changing the landscape buffer behind Wegmans to accomodate additional utilities and the widening of Telegraph Road. The changes would also add some new, permitted secondary uses to the site that could allow different businesses to open there than were originally permitted. The amended secondary uses would allow health clubs, child care centers, fast food restaurants, colleges or universities, special education schools, convenience stores and/or veterinary …

Kingstowne Farmers Market Returns with Many Favorites

Expect new options from Fresh Crunch and Colonial Kettle Corn.

They’re ba-aack! Instead of poltergeists – please tell me you’ve at least heard of the movie – “they” are many of the vendors who inspired long lines of regular customers at last year’s Kingstowne Farmers Market. The market opens Friday, May 4th at 4:00 p.m. Wear comfortable shoes as you head out to mark to return of vendors such as Cenan’s Bakery, Chesley Vegetable Farms & Allenberg Orchards, and Colonial Kettle Corn. “We’re happy to be coming back to Kingstowne for another year,” said Judy Payne of Colonial Kettle Corn. “We’re accepting credit cards this year … that could get some people in trouble,” she laughed. Matt Bressan’s trying to help his Fresh Crunch pickle customers steer clear of some dietary trouble. “I’ve changed a lot of …
