With Wegman's as an anchor store, the new Hilltop Village Center is rapidly filling up its storefronts, but some residents say it's just another boring strip mall. What do you think?
Hilltop Village Center is rapidly filling up with new shops and stores around its upcoming flagship store - Wegmans. Local business Vichelle's Hair Styling and Metropolitan Fine Arts are moving into the new development, but so far, most of the smaller surrounding stores are other chains including a few banks, medical offices, Mattress Warehouse, Massage Envy, Panda Express, Elevation Burger and Verizon. The new strip mall’s businesses are prompting some Patch readers to question why the county or developer didn’t make more an effort to attract more local, unique or high-end businesses businesses. The Metropolitan Fine Arts Center will move its Landsdowne Centre location across the street to the Hilltop Village Center when it is completed next year. MFAC confirmed the move Tuesday and Weingarten's updated site plan has MFAC listed for a 6,500-square-foot space at the new shopping center. According to the site plan, other businesses going in at the new Hilltop Village Center include: Wegmans will anchor the 350,000 sq. ft. shopping center and the plan includes 100,000 sq. ft. of office space. MFAC will also move its Fairfax Station location to the Lorton Workhouse Art Center in September. Commuters in NoVa are paying $3.57 per gallon right now—lower than last year, but higher than earlier this spring.
Heading out of town for Memorial Day this weekend? You'll be paying less at the pump than you did last year even though the Northern Virginia area has seen prices spike in recent weeks. Average gas prices for the Northern Virginia region this week are at $3.57 for a gallon of regular unleaded gas, down from $3.69 a gallon a year ago, according to AAA Mid-Atlantic. Paying $3.57 a gallon at the pump is better than what many Minnesotans are paying right now—an average of $4.27 a gallon, the highest prices in the country, according to the Star Tribune. Northern Virginia is faring better on gas prices than many other parts of the country, according to AAA. Currently, Virginia’s retail average is 26 cents cheaper than the national average. …

The development requires entrance improvements for when it opens in 2014.
The overload of construction work on Telegraph Road from Hilltop Golf Club to the Beulah Street intersection is all in preparation for the opening of Hilltop Village Center. According to VDOT, the new development requires entrance improvements that will include turning lanes and road widening. Wegmans recently proffered to build recreational amenities adjacent to the soon-to-be Hilltop Village Center that will include an adult soccer field, youth baseball field, pavilion, playground, an open play area, and an associated parking lot. Wegmans is expected to be completed by September 2014. The shopping center will include 250,000 sq. ft. of retail development and 100,000 sq. ft. of office space. The 24-hour gym is expected to open this summer.
The new Anytime Fitness at Rose Hill Plaza is having a pre-sale event for the first 100 people to become members. The new location has signs up at the plaza while it goes through construction in preparation for its expected summer opening. The fitness center started accepting members back in April, according to Linda Dreyer, director of marketing for Combined Properties, Inc. The space for Anytime Fitness is 4,100 sq. ft. and located in the same plaza with Safeway and Dollar Tree. The new sign for the 24-hour fitness center is also up on both sides of the building.
