U.S. Senate candidate met with about a dozen business leaders Friday morning in Springfield.
Energy, Obamacare, government regulations and spending were the hot topics at a morning roundtable discussion Friday between a dozen local business leaders and Republican U.S. Senate candidate George Allen in Springfield. The former governor and U.S. senator, in his stop at the West Springfield Government Center, said he's optimistic about the future and wants to change the trajectory of the U.S. economy. "My thoughts on energy are that it should be affordable, reliable and preferably American," said Allen, who backs the construction of the 1,700-mile Keystone XL Pipeline from Canada to Texas, which was rejected earlier this year by President Obama. "We truly have the ability to be strategically energy independent. We don't have to worry …

Democratic U.S. Senate candidate answered questions in appearance at AOL's Dulles office.
U.S. Senate hopeful Tim Kaine said the federal government should chip in for the Silver Line Phase 2 — but that the commonwealth also needs to pay a bigger share than the $150 million it has promised to ensure it gets built as scheduled. "What we are seeing in Washington is an anti-investment mentality," Kaine (D) told a group at AOL's Dulles headquarters Thursday. He said he worked with the Bush and Obama administrations to get $900 million for the first phase and the next phase has centered on who pays for it. "I believe it is a project of federal significance because it links Dulles with the most important capital city in the world," he said. "But when it comes to the state being a meaningful participant, Virginia has fallen short too. …

Arlington resident Jason Howell has less than $10,000 in the campaign bank and needs 1,000 signatures by June 12 to get on the ballot.
Arlington resident Jason Howell isn't letting incumbent Congressman Jim Moran's sizable war chest of nearly half-a-million dollars get in the way of running for Congress. Howell's got less than $10,000 in the bank for his campaign, so he's hitting every local barbecue, 5k and neighborhood meeting he can to help get the word out. Standing outside the Giant grocery store in Arlington's Cherrydale neighborhood over the weekend, Howell said hello to potential voters in what will likely be an uphill battle to try to unseat Moran, a Democrat who some say is gliding toward his 12th term since getting elected in 1990 to represent Virginia's 8th Congressional District. "My wife and I are doing the lion's share of signature-gathering," Howell said…

Virginia U.S. Senate candidate talks small business, education, jobs in Vienna at Tuesday roundtable
For the last two years, Pallabi Saboo's firm has had 35 unfilled positions. The company has been ready to move forward with the hires since the jobs, largely software engineering positions, became open — it just hasn't been able to find the talent to fill them. The Chief Executive Officer of the McLean-based Harmonia, Inc., was one of 30 women minority business leaders who met with former governor and U.S. Senate candidate Tim Kaine on Tuesday in the Tysons area of Vienna, many of whom said talent, education and access to capital were the biggest roadblocks to their companies succcess. "It's not sexy to be a engineer in high school," another woman said. "So how are they going to get into college [and pursue a career there]? We need to do …
Who are your neighbors donating to in the U.S. Senate race in Virginia?
A new Washington Post poll Tuesday shows the Virginia Senate race neck and neck, with Tim Kaine and George Allen split down the middle. Each has 46 percent, the same as a year ago, the newspaper noted. Kaine is leading in fundraising, collecting $7,434,457 to Allen's $6,137,826 as of March 31. Allen is in a primary race with three fellow Republicans, while Kaine has the Democratic field to himself. Allen leads the race in donations from in-state donors, with 47.8 percent of his donations coming from Virginia. Kaine's in-state donations account for 31.3 percent, according to the Center for Responsive Politics. However donations of less than $200 total $421,434 for Kaine and $130,700 for Allen. In fundraising, the two trade first-place in …

Talks about impasse over the Silver Line
Nearly 500 Democrats, gathered Sunday night at the Tysons Corner Hilton for their major fundraiser, promised to keep Virginia blue and heard from U.S. House of Representatives Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi. The guests* ranged from Democratic congressmen Jim Moran, (8th) and Gerry Connolly (11th) to state legislators, county supervisors, school board members, 2012 candidates, staffers from the Obama campaign and anonymous Democratic party workers who are the party's front line troops. This was the county Democrats' first annual Eleanor and Franklin Roosevelt dinner. Special guest: Anna Eleanor Fierst, great granddaughter of Franklin and Eleanor. She is vice president for administration of the Woman's National Democratic Club. "Democrats …

Rail to Dulles would be about the only way to make the airport more usable for me but can't say whether the cost externalities make it widely attractive. Personally, an IAD ticket needs to be $2-300 cheaper than a DCA ticket to make it worthwhile to trek out there. By the way Sally, my 2 year old and I love to go to DCA terminal A on the weekends and watch the planes takeoff and land. Wouldn't it…   more ›
