U.S. Senate candidate met with about a dozen business leaders Friday morning in Springfield.
Energy, Obamacare, government regulations and spending were the hot topics at a morning roundtable discussion Friday between a dozen local business leaders and Republican U.S. Senate candidate George Allen in Springfield. The former governor and U.S. senator, in his stop at the West Springfield Government Center, said he's optimistic about the future and wants to change the trajectory of the U.S. economy. "My thoughts on energy are that it should be affordable, reliable and preferably American," said Allen, who backs the construction of the 1,700-mile Keystone XL Pipeline from Canada to Texas, which was rejected earlier this year by President Obama. "We truly have the ability to be strategically energy independent. We don't have to worry …

Democratic U.S. Senate candidate answered questions in appearance at AOL's Dulles office.
U.S. Senate hopeful Tim Kaine said the federal government should chip in for the Silver Line Phase 2 — but that the commonwealth also needs to pay a bigger share than the $150 million it has promised to ensure it gets built as scheduled. "What we are seeing in Washington is an anti-investment mentality," Kaine (D) told a group at AOL's Dulles headquarters Thursday. He said he worked with the Bush and Obama administrations to get $900 million for the first phase and the next phase has centered on who pays for it. "I believe it is a project of federal significance because it links Dulles with the most important capital city in the world," he said. "But when it comes to the state being a meaningful participant, Virginia has fallen short too. …

Arlington resident Jason Howell has less than $10,000 in the campaign bank and needs 1,000 signatures by June 12 to get on the ballot.
Arlington resident Jason Howell isn't letting incumbent Congressman Jim Moran's sizable war chest of nearly half-a-million dollars get in the way of running for Congress. Howell's got less than $10,000 in the bank for his campaign, so he's hitting every local barbecue, 5k and neighborhood meeting he can to help get the word out. Standing outside the Giant grocery store in Arlington's Cherrydale neighborhood over the weekend, Howell said hello to potential voters in what will likely be an uphill battle to try to unseat Moran, a Democrat who some say is gliding toward his 12th term since getting elected in 1990 to represent Virginia's 8th Congressional District. "My wife and I are doing the lion's share of signature-gathering," Howell said…

In less than a month, Virginia voters will head to the polls for the Democratic and Republican primaries on Tuesday, June 12. Across Northern Virginia, voters will decide among candidates for the U.S. Senate as well as for the 8th and 11th Congressional districts. If your polling place is holding both a Republican primary and a Democratic primary, you can only vote in one primary. If you aren't registered to vote, you have until Monday, May 21 at 5 p.m. to register. Little known fact: If you are 17 years old now but you are turning 18 by the Nov. 6 general election, you can vote in the June 12 primary. If you plan to do this, call your voter's registration office ahead of time and be sure to bring official proof of your age. Polls will be…

A cocaine ring, school security cameras and more in the news this week across Fairfax County.
Here’s a look at some of the top Patch stories of the past week from across southern Fairfax County and a look at what’s coming up: Cocaine Ring More than two dozen people from Northern Virginia were arrested in connection with a Honduran cocaine ring. According to case documents, those charged — largely Honduran immigrants who have lived in Northern Virginia for the past seven years — hired couriers to smuggle cocaine to the United States, usually through wooden shoes or picture frames. In other crime news, police arrested Gloria Alfreda McMillan and charged her with a felony hit and run that resulted in the death of 21-year-old Shelinda Delores Arrington earlier in May on Harrison Lane in the Groveton area. School Security Cameras The …

Fairfax County Library announces the title for the ninth annual community-wide adult reading program.
Fairfax County Public Library has chosen "The Submission" by Amy Waldman as the book for the ninth annual All Fairfax Reads. Waldman is a former reporter for the New York Times. In this, her first novel, she chronicles the debate around a fictional 9/11 memorial. “Moving . . . Eloquent . . . A coherent, timely and fascinating examination of a grieving America’s relationship with itself," said Chris Cleave in The Washington Post. Waldman will discuss the book on Thursday, Sept. 27, as part of the Fall for the Book festival. During this "one book, one community" project, all Fairfax County adults are encouraged to read and discuss the same book. Residents are encouraged to leave one bag of non-perishable food at their mailboxes on Saturday for their mail carriers to pick up and donate to a local food pantry.
Letter carriers all over the U.S. will be looking to pick up more than just mail this weekend. Saturday is the official day of the Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive, an initiative of the U.S. Postal Service and the National Association of Letter Carriers. Residents can do their part by leaving at least one bag of non-perishable food at their mailboxes or wherever their mail is normally left. The carrier will pick up the food and take it to a local food bank. More than 49 million people in America struggle to feed themselves and their families and often end up going hungry, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. One in five, or 16 million of those 49 million people are children. The postal service and the association of letter …
Will Obama's announcement hurt his chances to carry Virginia in 2012 as he did in 2008?
Facing pressure to take a stand, President Barack Obama on Wednesday said he supports same-sex marriage. In an interview with ABC News’ Robin Roberts, Obama (D) described his “evolution” on the issue through talks with friends, and reflection on military personnel and members of his own staff who, he said, “are not able to commit themselves in a marriage,” adding that “at a certain point I’ve just concluded that for me personally it is important for me to go ahead and affirm that I think same sex couples should be able to get married.” Excerpts of the interview are scheduled to appear on ABC’s World News with Diane Sawyer on Wednesday evening. The full interview is scheduled to appear on ABC’s Good Morning America on Thursday morning. …

Rail to Dulles would be about the only way to make the airport more usable for me but can't say whether the cost externalities make it widely attractive. Personally, an IAD ticket needs to be $2-300 cheaper than a DCA ticket to make it worthwhile to trek out there. By the way Sally, my 2 year old and I love to go to DCA terminal A on the weekends and watch the planes takeoff and land. Wouldn't it…   more ›
