2024 Olympics, the Sock Monkeys and School Supply Give Away

Good morning, Kingstowne! August is coming to an end. But there's plenty to know and do in the area. Here's some information and events you should know about for Aug. 28.

The Sock MonkeysThe last summer concert at Lee District Park is at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday. This is the last performance in the Lee District Nights Summer Concert Series.

Save the Date: School Supply Distribution. The Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department will distribute backpacks and school supplies Thursday at Fire and Rescue Station 11, Penn Daw in Alexandria.

A Little Event Like the Summer Olympics: DC 2024 launched Tuesday to prepare Washington's bid to host the 2024 Summer Olympics. Fairfax County Supervisor Pat Herrity in a statement played up his county's potential contribution to the event, noting the 2015 World Police and Fire Games would offer a preview of how the logistics would work. The Police and Fire Games are expected to draw more than 12,500 athletes from 70 countries. How many athletes did the 2012 Olympics draw to London? About 10,500.
