School Supplies, 'Fill the Boot' and Dave Mathews Tribute Band

There are 24 days until the end of summer, and the northern Virginia area has plenty to offer. Here are some events you should know about for Aug. 29.

Firefighters Distribute School Supplies. The Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department will distribute backpacks and school supplies Thursday at Fire and Rescue Station 11, Penn Daw in Alexandria.

The Fairfax County Professional Fire Fighters and Paramedics hosted a kickoff event in Burke Wednesday morning for the countywide 2013 "Fill the Boot" collection campaign. The annual campaign benefits the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA).

China in My Eyes is an exhibit
 open through Oct. 7 featuring 70 photos of life in China taken by 30 residents, at Northern Virginia Community College, 4001 Wakefield Chapel Rd. in Annandale. Call 703-323-3159 for more information.

 The Virginia Tech School of Public and International Affairs and the Alexandria Black History Museum are sponsoring a walking tour of important sites associated with attorney Samuel Tucker, a local civil rights leader. The free tour will be offered at 12:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. and end at the history museum.
