Virginia Victims of Navy Yard Shooting, Classical Music and a Speak and Spell

Here are 5 things to know for Wednesday, Sept. 18.

Good morning, Kingstowne! You made it to Wednesday, Sept. 18 after a particularly long Monday and Tuesday. Here are some events in the northern Virginia area to help you get over the hump and closer to the weekend.

  • Classical Music. Serbian flutist Andjela Bratic and Serbian pianist Jasna Popovic perform at the Kennedy Center’s Millennium Stage at 6 p.m. Free. The Kennedy Center is located at 2700 F St. NW. 202-467-4600.
  • Speak and Spell. Virginia’s own Sen. Tim Kaine and Rep. Gerry Connolly will take the stage along with other lawmakers and journalists in that most American of showdowns – the spelling bee. Howard Fineman from the Huffington Post and Major Garrett from CBS News are some of the journalist contestants. $25 at 8 p.m., 529 14th St., NW, 13th Floor, Washington. 202-662-7500.
  • President Obama has ordered that all U.S. flags be flown at half-staff as a mark of respect for the victims of the “senseless acts of violence” at the Washington Navy Yard Monday.
  • Officials released the names of the 12 victims who died during Monday's Washington Navy Yard Shooting. A few of the victims were residents in northern Virginia.
  • Fairfax County posted a video on its emergency information blog providing tips on how to survive an active shooter incident.
