Capitol Shooting

A police officer and Secret Service agent were injured and the U.S. Capitol and neighboring government buildings went into lockdown Thursday afternoon after gunshots were fired on Capitol Hill following a high-speed car chase from the White House. The woman who led the chase was shot and killed.

Vienna Teen Missing

An 18-year-old from Vienna has been missing since Sunday morning, Sept. 29.

Joseph “Jojo” Jumaili was last seen at his home on Hilltop Road, according to his sister, Noelle.

Jumaili is 6-feet, 3-inches tall and approximately 180 lbs. He has brown hair, brown eyes and a tattoo off a pasta noodle on his left elbow. He is hypoglycemic.

Anyone with information about the whereabouts of Jumaili is asked to called the Fairfax County Police Department at 703-691-2131.

Fairfax City Mayor Assembles Task Force to Discuss Pet Shops After Second Petland Dog Death

City of Fairfax Mayor Scott Silverthorne said Thursday he is assembling a working group to explore how Fairfax City can tighten standards for pet shops after he received “countless" emails and phone calls from residents disgusted by the Fairfax City Petland's recent actions.

Patch reported on Oct. 2 that a puppy from the store died less than two weeks after being purchased.

The new owners were then sued by the store manager for money he said was stilled owed for the puppy. The death of the puppy was the second reported in less than two months.

Dogs From Hoarding Operation End Up at Local Rescues

After eight years, hundreds of hours and tens of thousands of dollars, about 50 dogs are in the custody of animal rescue operations across the state after being removed from what rescuers call an animal hoarding operation in Goochland County.

Many of the dogs are being medically evaluated and cared for by area rescuers who hope they will be able to eventually be adopted.

Police: Man Assaulted, Robbed on Huntington Avenue

A man walking in the 2200 block of Huntington Ave. about 8 p.m. September 29 was assaulted and robbed by three suspects, PFC Bud Walker with the Fairfax County Police Department said.

The three suspects were all described as black males in their 20s. The victim was transported to a nearby hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Five Arrests in Armed Robbery of Herndon Home

Several subjects forced their way into a home in the 1400 block of Summerset Place on Sept. 24 and robbed the residents at gunpoint.

Herndon police said they believe the incident may be gang related.

"Herndon Police Department's investigations section, along with the Northern Virginia Regional Gang Task Force, have made five arrests," Herndon police said. "More arrests are pending."

Woodbridge Man Charged With Abducting Lorton Woman For a Week

Police have charged Woodbridge resident Riaz Noory, 22, with abduction and attempted abduction after a Lorton woman reported being held against her will for a week at his house, Prince William County Police spokesperson Jonathan Perok said.

Police originally responded to Thenia Place at 1:09 a.m. on Sept. 25 for the report of a domestic incident.

"While investigating this incident, the victim reported to police that she was held against her will by the accused between Sept. 14 and Sept. 21.  The victim reported she attempted to leave the residence multiple times during that period, but was prevented by the accused.

Woman Charged With Intentionally Setting House Fire

An Alexandria woman is accused of intentionally burning a Mount Vernon home in May, resulting in $60,000 worth of damages and displacing five adults.

According to the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department, Tynekia Rogers, 38, of Claremont Woods Drive, allegedly started a fire in a bedroom, while the occupants were outside grilling. The residents were alerted to the fire by the alarm.

On Oct. 2 Rogers was charged with burning personal property greater than $200 and intentionally burning a house.

Jose Andres' America Eats Tavern to Open in Tysons

The America Eats Tavern, a product of chef and restaurateur Jose Andres, is on track to open this winter at the Ritz-Carlton Tysons Corner.  Andres is also the chef behind Spanish tapas restaurant Jaleo.

Leidos HQ Opens in Reston

Leidos, the $6-billion publicly traded spinoff from SAIC, officially opened for business last week. The company moved into office space at Reston Town Center, where more than 600 employees working in analytics, cyber security and engineering will be located.

Fredericksburg's First Rooftop Restaurant Opens

Vivify Burger & Lounge has opened in downtown Fredericksburg.  The restaurant at 314 William St. is the first in the city to offer rooftop dining. It's the second dining establishment for restaurateurs Blake and Aby Bethem, who also own Bistro Bethem at 309 William St.

Construction for Falls Church Harris Teeter Could Start January 2014

Plans for the new Harris Teeter grocery store are progressing, and construction could begin in January, Gary Fuller, principal planner with the City of Falls Church Planning Division, said.

The Winter Hill Association, has expressed concerns about noise, parking and even rodents, once digging begins.  They are scheduled to discuss the issues at their October meeting.

Treasured Child Consignment Store Closes

After 22 years in Burke, Treasured Child consignment store has closed.  According to a post on their Facebook page, the store management were given just five days notice that the lease was being given to another company.

Years-long Baseball Pursuit Continues to Tease Loudoun

It became clear this week that even a season playing at a borrowed baseball stadium would not happen for the Loudoun Hounds in 2014.

Teams participating in the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball Clubs released their 2014 schedules with no sign of the Loudoun Hounds. Last month, team representatives expressed hope that arrangements could be made to play at another ballpark since work has yet to begin on the Hounds stadium at One Loudoun.

Oakton High Teen Named National Student Poet

Oakton High School sophomore Aline Dolinh was recognized as a National Student Poet for the class of 2013.  The student poets program recognizes one student from each of five regions of the country. The award is sponsored by the President’s Committee on the Arts and the Humanities, the Institute of Museum and Library Services, and the Alliance for Young Artists and Writers.

McLean Holiday Homes Tour Tickets on Sale

Tickets are now on sale for the 47th annual McLean Woman's Club annual Holiday Homes Tour.  Last year, the Holiday Homes Tour raised about $20,000 for local and regional charities, organizer Laura Sheridan said.  Tickets may be purchased at stores in McLean, Great Falls and Vienna.
