Motorists Should Expect Detour Soon on Portion of Telegraph Road

The improvements will include reconstruction to the Huntley Meadows Park entrance and parking lot on South Kings Highway.

Reconstruction is currently taking place at the intersection of South Kings Highway and Telegraph Road.

Dustin Doerschlag, construction manager, said the project is currently on track to be completed in November 2014 as expected and a detour will be constructed soon, as they move forward with the project.

"We are definitely on schedule, and possibly a little ahead of schedule," he said. "We're getting ready to start constructing a slight detour that's going to allow us to build all of Telegraph Road at the same time."

This project features improvements along the 0.2 mile strip of Telegraph Road between South Van Dorn Street and South Kings Highway. The construction will also include reconstruction to the Huntley Meadows Park entrance and parking lot on South Kings Highway. The entrance is currently closed during construction.

Over the summer, construction workers completed an initial survey and installed erosion controls. They also began work on replacing the sanitary sewer line. Excavation and grading for the new entrance for Huntley Meadows Park is also underway. The hiker/biker trail has been shifted to avoid the construction area as well.

According to VDOT, lane closures will be performed as needed during non-peak travel times. No complete roadway closures are planned at the moment.

The project is expected to improve conditions for motorists using Telegraph Road to get to I-495. VDOT is designing and constructing the project but it is being funded by Fairfax County — which allocated $10 million for the features of the project.
