UPDATED: Power Outages Continue Tuesday in Alexandria and Fairfax County

UPDATE: With snow falling Tuesday morning across Northern Virginia, nearly 10,000 customers in Fairfax County and Alexandria still remained without power from Monday's storm.

At 7:00 a.m., Virginia Dominion Power reported 9,363 Northern Virginia customers still lacked power, including 6,356 in Fairfax County and 323 in Alexandria.

As of 11:30 p.m., the number of Dominion Power customers without power had dropped to 12,992 across Northern Virginia, down to 9,569 in Fairfax County and 423 in Alexandria.

By 5 p.m., the number of customers in the dark had dropped to 30,697 across Northern Virginia. Of those, 16,528 were in Fairfax County, which had the highest number of outages throughout Monday, and 438 in Arlington.

As of noon Monday, the number of customers without power across Northern Virginia had increased slightly to 66,769, including 45,452 in Fairfax County and 1,409 in Alexandria.

Dan Genest, a spokesman for Dominion Virginia Power, told Patch the company did not have an estimated restoration time for those customers in Northern Virginia along with Fredericksburg.

"As of this moment, we do not," Genest said. "This storm has hung around a lot longer than was anticipated. We have some areas where icing is still going on. And we have another storm estimated to come through early in the morning hours. So, between those two things, we don't have a restoration time — other than to say this will be a multi-day event."

Dominion does expect to get power restored to many more customers Monday afternoon and into the evening, though the company is keeping an eye on the next storm in case that puts people back in the dark, he said.

As of 10:15 a.m. Monday, Dominion Virginia Power reported 65,057 customers across Northern Virginia without power. That included 42,985 in Fairfax County and 2,851 in Alexandria.

Ice from the winter storm that hit the area Sunday is weighing down trees that have fallen on power lines, knocking out power.

• Use a flashlight only for emergency lighting. Never use candles.
• Unplug electrical equipment until a steady power supply returns.
• Practice proper generator and surface heater safety.
• Leave one light turned on so you know when power is restored.
• Eliminate unnecessary travel, especially by car. Traffic signals will stop working during an outage, creating traffic congestion.
• If power is restored, be certain it is steady before you plug equipment into it.
