School board seeking millions of dollars for additional Fairfax County school's.

In an effort to mitigate overcrowding in Fairfax County schools, the Fairfax County school board is seeking $866 million for school construction and renovations according to a Washington Post report.

Fairfax County's Capital Improvement Program (CIP) proposes the construction of five new elementary schools over the next several years, a plan to handle the increased enrollment numbers.

Over the past 7 years, the Fairfax County school system has seen exponential growth in its student body by 20,000 per year (with 184,500 students enrolled in 2013). If this trend continues, school officials project that the student population could ascend to nearly 200,000 by 2018.

The school board will revisit this matter in a public hearing in January, with a vote  expected by the end of the month.
