UPDATE, 3 p.m.: The National Weather Service has issued a Tornado Watch, at 3 p.m. today, for Northern Virginia.
The watch is in effect until 9 p.m.
The watch includes Arlington, Fairfax, Loudoun and Prince William counties as well as the cities of Alexandria, Falls Church and Manassas Park.
"We could see some unstable conditions today, bringing some severe weather to the area," said Jacqui Jeras, ABC-7 meteorologist, during an afternoon weather report.
"Today’s air mass is extremely unstable, which means some storms could turn severe with damaging winds and/or hail in addition to heavy downpours that could affect the afternoon commute," The Washington Post's Capital Weather Gang says.
The National Weather Service notes that showers and thunderstorms are likely, mainly after 3 p.m. Some of the storms could produce gusty winds and heavy rain, according to the forecast.
