Construction on Portion of Telegraph Road to Begin in March

The improvements will include reconstruction to the Huntley Meadows Park entrance and parking lot on South Kings Highway.

Kingstowne area residents can expect to see construction begin on the Telegraph Road improvement starting in March. The project will widen the road between South Kings Highway and South Van Dorn Street.

VDOT is designing and constructing the project but it is being funded by Fairfax County — which allocated $10 million for the features of the project. The project is currently in its preliminary design stage, according to the county website.

The improvement will also include reconstructing the Huntley Meadows Park entrance and parking lot on South King Highway to provide better and safer access. According to the VDOT website, utilities that will need to be relocated during this project include, a water main, sewer lines, gas line, and overhead utility lines.

Khalid Gandhi with VDOT said old lines will be updated and replaced by Fairfax Water and Washington Gas. Fairfax Water said residents who may be affected by any changes or construction during the project will be informed with a note on the door of their home.

Other features of the Telegraph Road improvements include:

  • One turn lane from northbound Telegraph Road to South Kings Highway (Route 633)
  • Single right-turn lane from southbound Telegraph Road to South Van Dorn Street
  • Dual left-turn lanes from South Kings Highway to southbound Telegraph Road
  • Dual left-turn lanes from South Van Dorn Street to northbound Telegraph Road
  • A raised median
  • Two striped, four-foot-wide on-road bike lanes
  • A five-foot-wide sidewalk on the east and ten-foot-wide shared-use path on the west
  • Replacement of the existing culvert carrying Dogue Creek under the road
  • Storm water management facilities
  • Provision for future dual left-turn lanes from northbound Telegraph Road to South Van Dorn Street

The project is expected to improve conditions for motorists using Telegraph Road to get to I-495. Construction is expected to be completed by 2015.

what about the no left turn from telegraph to s kings hwy between 6am and 9am in the mornings and 3pm and 6pm in the evening? This makes more traffic on telegraph rd when you have to continue on telegraph just to turn around in a neighborhood to come back up telegraph rd to get on to s kings hwy.

Perhaps you should replan your route so that you come south on Kings Highway instead of making illegal u-turns in the neighborhoods then.

Hi Lynda, When I spoke with VDOT, they said the features included on the site (the bullets I have in the story) are what will be reconstructed including the utilities relocation. That portion/whole strip on Telegraph Road will be reconstructed differently to make improvements for drivers. Ray
