VIDEO: Metropolitan Fine Arts Center Metro Barre Class

The center offers classes that are the latest trend in fitness.

The Metropolitan Fine Arts Center's Metro Barre classes have become quite popular in Kingstowne since they started in February last year. The center is one of the first studios in the D.C. metro area to offer Metro Barre classes. Instructor Melanie Latrash said people are enjoying the class at the center, as well as all over the county.

Metro Barre is a one-hour full body workout that combines elements from ballet, pilates and yoga. The exercises are low impact in nature with high intensity intervals of strength training, and the trend is becoming popular nationwide.

Latrash, who is certified by the Aerobics Fitness Association of America (AFAA) and YogaFit, said the class is mostly taken by women, but men are welcome to join.

"Metro Barre is an athletic approach to ballet, pilates and yoga," she said. "It merges three disciplines and always ends with relaxation or 'shavasana' in the last five minutes of the class."

The Metro Barre class is free for first timers, and after your initial Metro Barre class, cost ranges from $11 to $15. Latrash said she also has a referral program — if a current participant refers a friend, he/she will receive a free class as a thank you.
