UPDATE: Local Restaurant Inspection Reports

Find out how local restaurants measure up, courtesy of the Virginia Department of Health.

Here are the latest restaurant reviewed by the state health department. You can see their reports by looking on the chart below. For more details, click on the number under "critical violations," which will take you to the actual report on the state's Web site.

If the report includes information that about a restaurant correcting violations during a visit, we will report that information. If the report does not include any information, we will label it "n/a" for not applicable.

Restaurants recently inspected in the greater Kingstowne, Rose Hill and Franconia area include:

  • Burger King
  • Blimpie Subs & Salad

What's a 'Critical Violation'?

A "critical violation" is one that "poses a direct or immediate threat to the safety of the food being served."  Non-critical violations are generally related to cleaning or maintenance.

"Ideally, an operation would have no critical violations, or none which are not corrected immediately and not repeated. In our experience, it is unrealistic to expect that a complex, full-service food operation can routinely avoid any violations," according to VDH's website.

The site continues: "Keep in mind that any inspection report is a 'snapshot' of the day and time of the inspection. On any given day, a restaurant could have fewer or more violations than noted in the report. An inspection conducted on any given day may not be representative of the overall, long-term cleanliness of an establishment."

How This Works

Clicking on the restaurant name below will bring you to the business' page in the Patch directory of local businesses. Clicking here will bring you to VDH's web page where you can find detailed information on any of the restaurants listed below. Restaurants are listed on the site by county and alphabetical order.

Clicking on the number under critical violations will take you directly to that restaurant's report.

Patch will update this table as new reports come in. Have something to say about one of the restaurants? Tell us about it!

How about adding the Oriental Cafe, located in the Rose Hill shopping center?
Marilu LeBel November 30, 2011 at 11:53 am
Jim, maybe this will help you Below is the link for the Virginia Department of Health. Inspection reports are posted there for all restaurants in the Commonwealth.

Wow, I actually was planning on trying Riviera Family Restaurant in the next week. Glad I read this first. That is a terrifying number of violations - basically means that are exercising no food safety at all.

BDogg you can read up on the violations by clicking on the number under "critical violations." Also note the inspection was conducted over a year ago. Owners or anyone with a good experience is welcome to reply here as well.

I was in Subway (Hayfield Shopping Ctr) 11/22. The employee was violently coughing into her hand. She then proceeded to talke but buns off the tray. She coughted some more and handled more bread. I told the employee who was making my sandwich. She made the sick employee wash her hands...the coughing employee laughed..she thought it was really funny!

Lucky's Restaurant and Sports Bar across from Bungalows.
FNicholson December 3, 2011 at 08:27 pm
Interesting. A few weeks back, I had the same experience there, except it was a man, who was coughing and spitting up, but as he did, he moved below the counter. My son said this is what you're supposed to do. I would have sent him home. It was just wrong and disgusting.
Mary Ann Barton (Editor) December 4, 2011 at 03:42 pm
Hi FNicholson, I just added Lucky's; looks like their last inspection was November 2010 and at that time they had zero violations.
Victoria Crissman December 5, 2011 at 01:48 pm
Some of these are misleading, for example UNO's only has a 0 violation inspection because you used the follow-up visit 2 weeks after a BAD inspection. That one should be changed to 1/7 for violations...
Mary Ann Barton (Editor) December 5, 2011 at 03:09 pm
Hi Victoria, We're going with the most recent inspections but any reader can simply click on the number to go to the detailed report that goes back to previous inspections.
Mike December 14, 2011 at 12:03 pm
A few of these restaurants are in Franconia, not Kingstowne. Might be advisable to create a Franconia category so readers can know better of their locations.
Mike December 14, 2011 at 12:04 pm
This is when you vote with your feet. I have left restaurants before who didn't follow proper food handling procedures.
BDogg December 14, 2011 at 07:14 pm
I've seen enough from their report regardless of when it was; 23 violations isn't a bad day.... it is gross negligence.
Mary Ann Barton (Editor) December 15, 2011 at 01:08 am
Hi Mike, You wouldn't believe how difficult it is to find locations in the actual report! It's organized by city or county, with no ZIP codes. It would be extremely helpful if the health department could make it searchable w/ZIPs.

Some of the links are misdirected..Kumo's report is actually King Street Blues..
Tony Tribby June 14, 2012 at 12:40 pm
How can Riviera have had such a bad inspection, but then have not had a followup inspection for nearly two years? I understand the county is probably short-staffed, but to me, it would seem both the county (to make sure it didn't get even worse) and the owners (hoping to prove it was all fixed) would certainly want to have a followup inspection in some kind of timely period after that.

Those links appear to be correct. Were there other wrongs ones that you noticed?

awesome article, thank you for putting this together. Nice to see the vast majority of our local restaurants have done well
