Springfield Dentist Pulls Out New App Aimed At Singles

App aims to attract an equal number of men and women to local hot spots.

Have you ever walked through the doors of a bar and quickly realized that the odds of meeting your soul mate just went from "maybe" to "probably not"?

A Springfield man hoping to solve that says he has created an app that will put you in the right place at the right time.

Minh Tran’s Gender Zoo app, for iPhone and Android, calculates the male to female ratio in any bar in real time.

First, users check-in where they are. Then, Tran says, “those people provide a visual estimate of the crowd.”

The app also details the age range and crowd type: lawyers, college, military, etc.

If you want a bar that’s raining men or if you are looking for all the single ladies, this app might be just the right boost your status update needs.

Even though it’s new, Tran says the response has been positive, with some calling it “genius.”

Besides being good for your social status, Tran thinks it is good for business.  “Guys don’t like to stay at a bar with a high ratio of guys, so if they know women are there, they will likely go and stay,” says Tran.

Adam Seth, manager of Arlington Rooftop Bar and Grill, agrees.

“If a bunch of guys came out and a bunch of women, maybe it would attract more people to get here,” says Seth.

This isn’t Tran’s first run as an app creator.  He is also the brain behind an app called Pothole Alert that captures your GPS coordinates and sends an alert to your transportation department, like the Virginia Department of Transportation.

“There have been times when they call me and ask about a specific report, so they are paying attention to these reports,” says Tran.

This dentist by day says creating apps is “fun and fulfills a curiosity,” but adds that he'll keep his day job.
