Vornado Releases Video Preview for Springfield Town Center

New video gives insight into shopping mall scheduled to be completed by the summer of 2014.

Vornado Realty Trust has provided a preview video of the Springfield Town Center which is expected to be completed by summer 2014. The new video — provided on the Vornado and shopping center Web sites — elaborates on the Springfield area and new features shoppers can expect when the center opens next year.

Some features, Springfield and surrounding area residents should expect, include a multi-screen cinema, a new main entrance with valet parking, a health club, 700-seat food court, multiple kids' areas throughout the property and more than 7,600 parking spaces.

According to the video, more than 500,000 cars pass the property daily and about 10,000 D.C. metro riders stop at the Franconia-Springfield Metro Station which is a 10-minute walk from the shopping center.

The Springfield Mall is currently going through a transformation in preparation for its opening next summer.

"I mentioned earlier in my opening remarks the Springfield Mall in Virginia is in the midst of a total transformation that will make it the dominant fashion offering for an affluent and underserved trade area in the south side of the D.C. Metro area," Schear said.

The new Springfield Town Center will include existing anchors J.C. Penney, Macy's and Target, as well as a new cinema, health club and...offices, along with 45,000 square feet of restaurants, a new food court and 450,000 square feet of mall shops. The construction leasings are on schedule for summer 2014 opening, and we will be announcing additional lead tenants later this year."

When completed, the new town center will be 1.3 million sq. ft., accessible to about 800,000 people with an estimated household income of more than $117,000 a year and growing, according to the Vornado Web site.

@ T.J. I was told that this was going to be an outdoor type mall . . . with open roof, etc. Just wanted to mention that the map that Vornado provides of the area is backwards or mirrored. It has Manassas where DC should be and Potomac Mills to the north.

I, too, was surprised by the video because it does seem to depict more of a mall -- a building with acres of parking surrounding it; than an open air town center. I wonder what the outside eating is going to be like given the surrounding parking lot. The images in the video reminded me of the malls I visited in Kuwait. It is too bad because I was hoping for something which could develop into having a real sense of unique place rather than another fashion mall.

As merchants battle the increasing use of the 'Net for customer traffic, it will take brave and unique retailers who commit to a new presence at Springfield "Mall". The video shows a dressed up version of it's prior self.

OK, given the re-do of this place, can anyone tell me what Vornado has planned to make is safer than it was when Barbara "Bobbie" Bosworth was abducted and murdered in 2008? Don't recall her? Here's an excerpt from a June 2012 article in Washington Post: ...Court records show that Springfield Mall general manager Michael Lowe warned Vornado that a gang war was brewing in Springfield and ”the Mall may easily become the chosen battlefield.” He wrote an e-mail to Vornado telling them that the Cerro Grande homicide was “directly linked to Cerro Grande’s operation as a nightclub catering to gang members, mostly SSL [South Side Locos] and MS 13 [Mara Salvatrucha].” Lowe said the restaurant’s own security guards wore masks “to hide their identify from their own patrons.” In July 2008, Lowe wrote a memo criticizing Securitas for their poor staffing of the mall, and said they’d been told in November 2007 that their main problems were in the parking lots. In August 2008, a woman was assaulted and robbed in the parking lot outside Macy’s, where Bobbie Bosworth was taken a month later. Even a week after Bosworth’s death, Lowe was outraged to find that Securitas only had one guard patrolling the exterior of the vast mall, when they were supposed to have four, court filings show.... It will be interesting to see if there is a change for the better.
