NORTHERN VA. SISTERS OPEN ‘ABOVE GRADE LEVEL’- IN-HOME TUTORING SERVICE

Above Grade Level of Northern Virginia recently opened its doors; an inspiration born from two Northern Virginia sisters, Elizabeth Colon and Christa Huntley of Alexandria, Va. Both new moms of infant daughters, they joined their passions for education and children. Above Grade Level of Northern Virginia serves most of Fairfax County, providing an in-home tutoring service for kindergarteners through 12th graders, including a free skills assessment. The program uses a customized approach with an in-home professional tutor, diagnostic evaluation, specialized teaching curriculum and a guarantee for results. “As new moms, we’re thrilled to be actively involved in educational programs that can help kids and parents get the specialized care and attention they need to move them forward and improve on their academic careers,” said Elizabeth Colon and Christa Huntley, co-owners of Above Grade of Northern Virginia in Alexandria, Va.

Above Grade Level of Northern Virginia’s skills assessment was created by professors at the University of California, Berkeley, and is customized based on the way an individual answers the questions. It provides an excellent indicator as to where children might have missed critical skills and is available for students who need tutoring in math and English. It can be taken online at home. After a child completes the assessment, a free in-home consultation is arranged to discuss the results and recommend a specialized tutoring program.

Colon and Huntley come from diverse career backgrounds. While Colon conducted employee training in the corporate world, Huntley delved into criminology and forensic research for the government. With more and more schools dealing with budgetary constraints and large student-to-teacher ratios, both saw a need for customized, individual in-home tutoring. Colon graduated from Penn State University with dual degrees in international politics and Spanish and resides in the Fredericksburg, Va. area, with her husband and daughter. Huntley received her master’s degree in forensic psychology from Marymount University and dual bachelor’s degrees in criminology and psychology from Florida State University. Huntley lives in Alexandria, Va. with her husband and infant daughter.
