Five Things: Road Closure Update

Senate passes budget deal, enter your "Love of Country" essay, electricity earns top spot.

  1. It’s going to be hot and muggy today with a high of 95 and a 50% chance for scattered thunderstorms. The UV (ultraviolet) index is 8, which means a very high risk of harm from unprotected sun exposure. Minimize sun exposure during midday hours from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Protect yourself by liberally applying a sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15. Wear protective clothing and sunglasses to protect the eyes.
  2. Road Closure Update: The left HOV exit ramp from I-66 East to I-495 North and South will be CLOSED for construction beginning TODAY through Friday, 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and again on Monday, August 8 and Tuesday, August 9.
  3. August is National Inventors Month. Started in 1998 by the United Inventors Association of the USA, the Academy of Applied Science, and Inventors' Digest magazine, it celebrates invention and creativity. Electricity, the workhorse of the modern world, is considered the 20th century’s greatest invention. 
  4. By a resounding 74-26, the Senate passed the budget deal.  President Obama is now focused on pushing for tax revenues, saying that Congress needs to focus on job creation efforts and that future deficit reduction needs to include both spending cuts and tax revenues.  Read more about what this deal may mean for the future. 
  5. The Fairfax County Public Library and the For Love of Country Foundation present an essay and poetry contest for rising 7th, 8th and 9th graders. The topic is: “United States: One nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.” Monetary prizes will be awarded on the topic. We’ve got all the details here.
