Back to School Nights this Week

Try Transit Week this week, "Fall for the Book" Festival news.

  1. Today will be partly cloudy with a high of 72 degrees. There’s a 20 percent chance of rain all day, increasing to 30 percent by tonight.
  2. This week is the 2011 Fall for the Book Festival. Located in multiple locations throughout Fairfax county and D.C, this year’s events rally around the commemoration of the 10th anniversary of the September 11, 2001 attacks. Writers of fiction, history, political studies, and religious studies ask, discuss and dialogue about how the United States and the world have changed because of 9-11.
  3. Lots of Back to School Nights set for this week. Mark Twain Middle School has their 7th grade night on Tuesday, Sep. 20 at 6:00 p.m. Their 8th grade night is Wednesday, Sep. 21 also at 6:00 p.m. Find a complete listing here.
  4. This week is the 4th annual Try Transit Week. During Try Transit Week, Virginians are challenged to try a more environmentally positive transit option such as bus and rail service, carpools, vanpools or telework. Accept the challenge and you may win a year’s pass on the transit option of your choice!
  5. On this day in 1971, women ran in the NYC Marathon and Beth Bonner took home the garland with a time of 2:55:22, breaking the 3-hour barrier.  The Men’s winner was Norman Higgins in 2:22:54.
