Five Things: Downed Helicopter

More details about the downed Chinook in Afghanistan, construction and road closure updates, last week to view historic Civil War photos

  1. It’s going to be hot today with a scorching and humid high of 96 degrees. Later in the evening we’ll see a few more clouds in the sky bringing a 10% chance of rain.
  2. Insurgents in Afghanistan shot down a Chinook (CH-47) transport helicopter on Saturday, killing 30 Americans, 22 of them Navy Seal Commandos and another 8 Afghanis. The Taliban took credit for the attack.  Intelligence indicates all the fighters from the area where the attack originated are entirely Afghans and almost all local residents.   This attack comes during a surge of violence that has accompanied the drawdown of American and NATO troops.
  3. On this day in the year 1899, A.T. Marshall of Brockton, Massachusetts patented the refrigerator.
  4. Telegraph Road work continues. Both north and south ramps will be closed from 8:00 am-4:00 pm.
  5. This is your last week to view historic Civil War photographs featuring both Union and Confederate Soldiers at the Library of Congress Thomas Jefferson Building on 10 First Street SE, Washington, D.C. Read more about The Last Full Measure: Civil War Photograph
