Five Things: 66th Anniversary of A-Bomb on Nagasaki

Sam Clay at John Marshall Library and a look back at President Nixon's resignation.

  1. Look for a high of 94 degrees and lots of humidity. There’s a 40 percent chance of afternoon and evening thunderstorms, some of which may be severe.
  2. Join Library Director Sam Clay at 7:30 p.m. at the Rose Hill John Marshall Library where you can share your opinions and priorities about the vision and future of the Fairfax County libraries.
  3. This day in 1974, Vice President Gerald Ford became our nation’s 38th President. Just minutes prior, Richard Nixon, who had resigned the day before, lifted off with his family from the White House lawn in a helicopter bound for his home in San Clemente, Cal.
  4. Monumental drops in the stock market continue and it’s causing Americans to pull inward. Small businesses are delaying new hiring, home buyers are getting cold feet and shoppers are closing their wallets, all signs of contraction that the economy doesn’t need right now. Forecasters who had predicted a 4 percent growth in the economy are now cutting predictions by at least half. But it’s not all dismal news.
  5. Today is the 66th anniversary of the United States' attack on the Japanese city of Nagasaki. At approximately 11:02 a.m. an estimated 40,000 people were killed in the world's second atomic bomb attack.
