Five Things: Republican Debate

Musical movie The Wizard of Oz debuts; learn how to pump up your perennials

  1. Today’s temperatures should bring a nice respite from the summer heat. Today's high will be 87 degrees with a 10% chance for some showers.
  2. The Republican campaign picked up speed last night in Ames, Iowa, in a candidates’ debate that featured some fierce exchanges amongst seven of the eight possible Republican Presidential nominees. Tim Pawlenty of Minnesota threw out the first few punches, directed at what he claimed is Michele Bachmann’s lack of experience and proven track record, also making pointed digs at Mitt Romney. Noticeably absent was Rick Perry, who will announce on Saturday his intentions to enter the race. Romney fielded panel questions about his time as CEO of Bain Capital while Herman Cain, the pizza magnate, was asked to explain why he thought Romney’s Mormon religion would be an obstacle to overcome in the Presidential campaign. Senator Rick Santorum and Libertarian Ron Paul of Texas also had their hands in the joust, as they debated over the threat Iran posed to the U.S. One resounding statement from across the entire field: their unwillingness to accept any deficit deal that included raising taxes.
  3. August is Children's Eye Health and Safety Month.  Visit the Prevent Blindness America web site for information general eye health as well as preventing eye injuries in children and signs of possible eye problems.  Check with your child’s school to see about whether they perform an eye check during the school year.
