Here are some of the top Patch headlines from the past week from Fairfax County and nearby.

Braddock District residents and Supervisor John Cook helped break ground Wednesday at the site of the former Kings West Swim Club and the new location of Rabbit Run community park at 4803 Tapestry Dr., in Fairfax.

The new park, which Cook called a "win-win-win" for Fairfax County residents, will include a new stormwater management facility in addition to the park, which will replace the clubhouse and parking lot.

Police Close Election Fraud Investigation Into Congressman's Son; No Charges Filed

Patrick Moran, the congressman's son who was caught on tape seemingly giving advice on how to skirt voter identification laws, will not face any criminal charges, the Arlington County Police Department announced Thursday.

Authorities have concluded their three-month investigation into election offense allegations against Moran, son of U.S. Rep. Jim Moran, a Democrat who represents parts of Northern Virginia.

No Injuries in Springfield House Fire Thursday Morning
Fairfax County Fire and Rescue units responded to a house fire at 8134 Carr Place in Springfield Thursday morning. There were no civilian or personnel injuries.

According to Capt. William Moreland of the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department, units arrived on scene at approximately 10 a.m. to find heavy flames coming from the garage area of the home.

Electrician Injured Friday in Fire at Springfield Home

An electrician was sent to the Burn Center at Washington Hospital Center Friday afternoon after a circuit breaker he was working on exploded at a home on Morning Dew Court in Springfield. The extent of his injuries was not known.

Firefighters from Fairfax County Fire and Rescue were called to the home at around 2:15 p.m. Friday, said Captain William Moreland. When firefighters arrived they found the home engulfed in flames.

In Hagel Hearing, Kaine Talks Sequestration Concerns

U.S. Sen. Tim Kaine Thursday questioned Secretary of Defense nominee Sen. Chuck Hagel during his confirmation hearing on issues affecting Northern Virginia's economy, the nation’s security, and how service members can be successful after leaving active duty, according to a news release from Kaine's office.

Long-time member of the Armed Services Committee, John Warner, the former U.S. senator from Virginia, introduced Hagel at the hearing.

FCPD Warns Public of 'Inheritance Scam'

FCPD has received many reports from residents nationwide involving a phony inheritance proclamation, according to a recent news release.

These types of scams usually arrive in the form of an email announcing that the recipient has a multi-million dollar inheritance but must contact an FCPD police investigator to receive the funds.

Ebbin, Puller Vote for Ban on Smoking in Car With Kids

The Senate today passed a bill to prohibit smoking in a vehicle when a child under 15 is present.

Senators voted 30-10 for the bill, which now goes to the House of Delegates for consideration. All Democrats — including Vienna's senators Chap Petersen (D-Fairfax City) and Janet Howell (D-Reston) — supported the bill, along with half of the Senate Republicans.

Arcadia: Proposing a Restaurant at Woodlawn Plantation?

The founders of Arcadia Center for Sustainable Food and Agriculture reportedly have plans to expand their agricultural services at Woodlawn Plantation with proposals for a restaurant that would eventually take over space now occupied by Woodlawn Stables.

Serial Groper Strikes Again, Incidents Now Number 17

The serial groper is back. A serial groper — who has attacked 15 women and now a 16th and 17th victim Wednesday — has struck again, according to Lucy Caldwell, spokeswoman for the Fairfax County Police Department.

Fairfax Board Could Police Illegal Signs

At the end of February, the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors will weigh using jail inmates from the county’s Community Labor Force to clean up illegal signs in problem areas across the county.

A public hearing on the issue is set for Feb. 26.

SYA to Run Additional Winter Softball Clinics

The Southwestern Youth Association girls fastpitch softball program has added two more winter clinics in February and March for girls who are new to the sport, or want to improve their game for spring season and high school tryouts.

Any girl from age 7-18, regardless of experience or whether or not they place with SYA, is welcome to sign up for the clinic, which will be held at a training facility in Manassas.

Fairfax Daycare Hearing Set for March

A public hearing about new daycare restrictions will take place in March.

Fairfax County officials aren’t budging on the number of children a home day care facility is allowed to care for without a special permit.

Preliminary Hearing for Eric Kweder Starts Monday

The preliminary hearing for Eric Kweder, 34, will begin at 2 p.m. Monday, according to Fairfax County court records. Kweder was arrested and charged with 2nd degree murder in November after FCPD received a report of a suspicious death on Hydrangea Drive in November.

Fairfax County Seeks Volunteers for Golf Championship in Lorton

The Fairfax County Park Authority is looking for volunteers for the 2013 U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship taking place July 15-20 at Laurel Hill Golf Club in Lorton.

Edison Academy and High School Career and Technical Education Open House

Rising 10th, 11th, and 12th grade High School students who attend Fairfax County Public Schools in the vicinities of Alexandria, Lorton, Springfield, Mount Vernon, Hayfield, Falls Church, and Annandale Communities. 

You are invited to come out to Edison High School's Career and Technical Education Open House this coming Wednesday night to enjoy a free pasta dinner, while it lasts, starting at 5:30 followed by an information session for parents and prospective students who may want to consider attending advanced Career preparatory classes at the Edison Academy next year as part of their high school experience.
