Virginia Inaugural Ball: 'You Can't Help But Feel Optimistic'

An estimated 1,100 people attended the Virginia Inaugural Ball on Sunday at the Westin Arlington Gateway to celebrate the second inauguration of President Barack Obama — and gear up for key statewide elections in 2013.

History was made Monday in Washington, D.C. for the swearing-in ceremonies for President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden, for their second terms of office, and supporters traveled near and far to witness the occasion. 

Patch was at the scene, from sunrise until sunset, at the National Mall. Unofficial crowd estimates said that one million people were on hand for the event.

Fairfax County Public Schools opened on a two-hour delay Thursday morning due to snow that fell overnight.

Fairfax County Public Schools closed two hours early Friday.

The decision came as the area was expected to see anywhere from 1 to 2 inches of snow between 2 and 5 p.m., just ahead of the evening rush hour, the Capital Weather Gang reports.

Board OKs 3 New Elementary AAP Centers

Fairfax County School Board members voted Thursday to expand the system's Advanced Academic Program Centers to three additional elementary schools this fall in an effort to relieve overcrowding at several existing centers.

Volunteers Give Back on National Day of Service at County Animal Shelter

On Jan. 19, the National Day of Service, the Fairfax County Animal Shelter was buzzing with volunteers helping socialize animals, organize donations and help visitors stopping by to adopt a pet.

The volunteers do what they do, they say, for the love of the animals sheltered there and to help the animals find homes.

Teenage Boy Struck by Car in Burke

A teenage boy was struck by a car Thursday night at the intersection of Rolling Road and Old Keene Mill Road in Burke, according to Fairfax County Police.

Police responded to a call at 5:04 p.m. about a pedestrian struck at the intersection. According to Eddy Azcarate, public information officer with the Fairfax County Police Department, the intersection was closed for about 90 minutes while police and Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department units were on scene.

Snow Plow Damages Valve on Propane Tank, Causes Leak in Burke

A snow plow broke the valve off of a propane tank on Premier Court in Burke Thursday morning, causing a small leak.

Units arrived on scene shortly before 8 a.m. to monitor the situation and ensure there was no harm to residents, Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department spokesman Dan Schmidt said.

County Now Accepting Food Donations for 'Stuff the Bus'

Fairfax County has partnered with the MV Transportation company and local area grocery stores and non-profits to provide food donations for its "Stuff the Bus: Feeding Fairfax Families" campaign.

UPDATE: Fairfax Station Woods Community Marker Smashed by SUV

The Fairfax Station Woods community marker was smashed by an SUV Tuesday evening, according to a neighbor who heard the crash and witnessed Fairfax County Police and Fire and Rescue at the scene. 

The driver reportedly was not seriously hurt.

At around 7:20 p.m., a 48-year-old Fairfax Station man experienced a "medical emergency" and drove off the road, striking a one-way sign, the Clipper Drive road sign and crashed into the stone and cement structure, according to Fairfax County Police.

UPDATE: Driver Identified in Fatal Crash Tuesday on Southbound I-95

A minivan driver died Tuesday morning at the scene of a crash on southbound Interstate 95 near the Fairfax County Parkway, Virginia State Police report.

A state police trooper was called to the crash scene at 6:44 a.m. The minivan ran into the rear of a three-axle truck, according to state police.

Virginia State Police Wednesday afternoon identified the driver of the mini-van. The deceased is Ellen S. Linder, 65, of Kensington, Md.

Wegmans, Hilltop Village Set to Open in 2014

The future Hilltop Village Wegmans near the intersection of Telegraph and Beaulah Roads is still just a pile of dirt at the moment, but locals can look forward to the opening in 2014.

Wegmans updated its website with the anticipated opening, though it still doesn't provide an exact opening date.

Mount Vernon High School to Host International Baccalaureate Info Sessions

Mount Vernon High School will host two info sessions to discuss the three elements of the International Baccalaureate Program: IB Middle Years Program (MYP), IB Diploma Program (DP), and the new IB Career-Related Certificate (IBCC).
