Thousands Without Power After Storms

Thunderstorms have moved out of the area, leaving cooler weather behind.

Update 5:15 p.m. - More than 4,000 remain without power in Franconia and Dominion Power does not have an estimate of when power will be restored. The outages mostly center around the intersection of King Centre Drive and Hayfield Road in Franconia and around Ridgeview Park in Rose Hill.

Update 4:01 p.m. - Dominion Power is now reporting more than 6,500 people are without power in the Franconia area. Another 2,000 in the Rose Hill area are without power.

The power company does not yet have an estimate of when power will be restored, but residents can check the Dominion online power outage map for updates throughout this evening.

The rain should move out of the area by 5:30 p.m., forecasters predict, leaving much cooler and less humid air behind. Tomorrow's forecast calls for sun and temperatures in the mid-80s. Friday and Saturday will be similar to Thursday.

The National Weather Service has issued a severe thunderstorm warning and a flash flood warning for the City of Alexandria and parts of Fairfax County.

Less than one-fifth of an inch of rain is expected to fall through the rest of Wednesday and Wednesday night, but heavy and fast incoming rain has the potential to cause minor street flooding in lower Huntington and the Belle View/New Alexandria area this evening.
