Revving Up For the Holiday Weekend, Despite High Gas Prices

Kingstowne auto care expert has simple recommendations to keep your holiday plans right on course.

Millions of Americans aren’t letting high gas prices put the brakes on their Memorial Day weekend, but there are other factors that could derail your plans if you don’t take care of them now.

According to the American Automobile Association, approximately 30.9 million Americans will travel by car this weekend, slightly down from last year.

With the average price of gas hovering around four dollars in this area, pumping up for that long haul will be pricey.  But what if you had to add tire repair, towing or even engine breakdown to that receipt?

John Bautista, owner of Kingstowne Auto Care, has advice that will keep you on the right path this Memorial Day weekend and beyond.

“The easiest thing to do is check your tire pressure and fluids, like oil, transmission and coolant," says Bautista.  Check the driver's side door panel for the appropriate tire pressure for your car.

If you aren't the do-it-yourself kind of person, bring your vehicle in for a closer inspection.  Bautista recommends a trip check.  “That consists of brake inspection and bumper to bumper inspection," he says.

Following the manufacturer’s service recommendations is a plus in car care, Bautista says.  Most manufacturers recommend you get your vehicle checked out every 30 thousand, 60 thousand and 90 thousand miles.  “If you are going on a big trip and you are at 94 thousand miles and you haven’t done a 90 thousand mile check-up, bring it in,” says Bautista.

A bad battery could also stall your date with that beach chair you dusted off. Bautista advises if your battery is at least three years old get it tested and/or replaced.

What about giving your gas a possible boost with an additive?

“I am not a believer in additives. Wverything is supposed to run well if you keep up with manufacturer’s recommendations," says Bautista.

So your bags are packed, the hotel is book, now all you have to do is inspect what’s under the hood. Don’t let a breakdown slow your roll this holiday weekend.
