A 10-K and the Old Town Farmer's Market

Do you know what you're doing this weekend? The weather is supposed to be lovely, so we have a few suggestions for you. 

1. The "George Washington Classic" 10-K Race (and 2-K "Fun Run")

Where/When: The intersection of King Street and N Royal Street, Alexandria, VA; Saturday, Feb. 19 at 8:30 a.m.

Why Go: Are you feeling ambitious this weekend? If so, then you can still register for this 10 kilometer race on Eisenhower Avenue in Alexandria on Saturday. For those who don't think they can do the whole 10 kilometers, a run/walk is also available. Registration closes at 8:59 p.m. today, but late registration will be available at the event on Saturday.

Where/When: The Mount Vernon Community Children's Theater, 8503 Fort Hunt Rd, Alexandria; Saturday, Feb. 19 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, Feb. 20 at 3 p.m.

Why Go: If you and your children are strapped for something to do on either Saturday or Sunday, take them to see this abridged version of what is arguably on of Shakespeare's most famous works.

3. Old Town Farmer's Market

Where/When: 301 King Street, Alexandria; Saturday, Feb. 19 from 5 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.

Why Go: Take advantage of the warm temperatures on Saturday and stop by the Farmer's Market in Old Town for some fresh, local produce. 

Pricing: Entry is free.

 

4. 

Where/When: Fairfax County Animal Shelter, 4500 W Ox Rd, Fairfax, VA 22030; Feb. 17-19, Noon to 5 p.m.

Why Go: The shelter received 161 cats from a single home in a hoarding case in November 2010. Many of those cats are now healthy, available and looking for safe, loving, permanent homes. Many other cats and kittens staying at the shelter this winter will also be available.

5. Black History Month at Mount Vernon

Where/When: ; Daily, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Why Go: This month-long event at the historic Mount Vernon Estate is both educational and fun for the whole family. 

Pricing: Included in regular estate admission.
