  2. Leader of Afghanistan’s High Peace Council and former President of Afghanistan, Burhanuddin Rabbani, was assassinated yesterday by a suicide bomber. A key figure in the current peace talk efforts between The Taliban and the Taliban’s enemies, the former Northern Alliance, Rabbani had recently made tenuous steps toward speaking with Taliban members who actually had the power to negotiate and discuss a peace process. Mr. Karzai, the current President of Afghanistan, was in the United States at the time of the assassination. He cut his planned visit short and returned immediately to his country.
  3. Today, September 21 is designated International Day of Peace.  Established by a United Nations resolution in 1982, it is a day when individuals, communities, nations, and governments all over the world are encouraged to create practical acts of peace.   To inaugurate the day, the "Peace Bell" is rung at U.N. headquarters. The bell is cast from coins donated by children from all continents.  President Obama will address the United Nation’s General Assembly today.  Read about more events here

  5. On this day in 1780, American Revolutionary War General Benedict Arnold met with Britain’s Major John Andre offering to hand over West Point to the British in return for money and a position in the British Army.
