Virginia Primary Elections Today

Martin Luther King Memorial, U.S. Navy Band concert.

  1. Today promises to be another truly pleasant day! The high will hit 82 degrees with a few clouds in the sky and a mere 10 percent chance for showers.
  2. On this day in 1902, Fannie Farmer opened her first cooking school, Miss Farmer’s School of Cookery in Boston. A pioneering cookbook author, Fannie changed the face of cooking, advocating standardized measurements in recipes. Farmer was also on the cutting edge when it came to proper nutrition for the sick.  The Fannie Farmer Cookbook is still in print today.
  3. Enjoy the sounds of the United States Navy Band at Concerts on the Avenue, tonight at 8:00 p.m. at 7th and Pennsylvania Avenue on the Navy Memorial Plaza. This year’s Concerts on the Avenue series pay tribute to the 100th anniversary of naval aviation. “Take flight with us in commemorating this centennial as we perform music from “Wicked,” “Top Gun” and “E.T. the Extraterrestrial,” as well as other popular music from the 1980s and 1990s.”
  4. The are being held today.  Voting booths open at 6 a.m. and close at 7 p.m.
  5. The new Martin Luther King Memorial has been unveiled.  The public got its first glimpse of the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Memorial in Washington D.C. The memorial sits between those honoring Presidents Abraham Lincoln and Thomas Jefferson. It depicts King emerging from a stone, the concept coming from a line in his “I Have a Dream” speech: “Out of the mountain of despair, a stone of hope.”
