Monday's tornado watch has been cancelled

Updated (Monday, Feb. 28, 12:50 p.m.) The National Weather Service has cancelled the tornado warning in Fairfax County.

The National Weather Service has issued a tornado watch for Fairfax and the surrounding areas until 4 p.m.

A tornado watch is issued when severe tornadoes and thunderstorms are possible in the affected area, according the National Weather Service's website. People in the watch area are encouraged to prepare for severe weather, including high winds, and potentially hail.

tornado warning would not be issued unless a tornado is detected or imminent in the area. If a tornado warning is issued, affected residents are encouraged to take shelter in the lowest level of your home, away from all windows. More tips on what to do in case of a tornado can be found here.

Monday, Feb. 28: Today we'll see strong thunderstorms and wind, with a high temperature of 66 degrees and a 90 percent chance of precipitation. Tonight is supposed to reach an overnight low of 34 degrees, with more thunderstorms and strong winds. There is a 90 percent chance of rain tonight as well. 

Tuesday, March 1: Tomorrow will be clear and sunny, with a high temperature of 49 degrees. Tomorrow night will also be clear, with an overnight low of 32 degrees.
