Bring on Spring!

Gardening in Northern Virginia

Spring is in high gear in the Kingstowne/Springfield area.  Grocery stores, home improvement stores, and just about any other retail outlet with a strip of sidewalk they can lay claim to, has garden plants out on display.  Pansies have been pushed aside for vegetable starts and perennials, and the plant sales are springing up like wild onions.  Spring is one of my favorite times of the year.

This is my third spring in Springfield, and I have great hopes for my garden this year.  I have a pretty killer front yard right now, and if you're a bee, butterfly, or a bird, you are be able to feast at least three seasons of the year on what grows there.  My garden is a combination of native and non-native plants, with an emphasis on edible plants. This year, I'm introducing more native trees and perennial, edible plants. I hope this will be the year of bounty for winged and footed alike.

I feel lucky to live in Northern Virginia where the weather is (usually) beautiful and the gardening options are plentiful.  Whether you are a backyard, front yard, balcony, or container gardener, there is always something to grow.  Join me in my adventures in gardening, here and at my personal blog: Gardening in Northern Virginia.

P.S.  Container Gardening talk at Arlington County Library's Central Branch, tonight (5/4) at 7PM.  It doesn't look like you have to be an Arlington County resident to participate.  For more information, visit the ACL blog.
