Community Corner

Greater Wilton Woods Citizens Association Membership Meeting

The February 15th membership meeting will be held at 7:30 PM at the All Saints Sharon Chapel Church, 3421 Franconia Road, Alexandria, VA 22310.  The agenda for the meeting includes Officer elections, discussions of community concerns, a review of the 2011 budget, and a presentation addressing non-native invasive plants in our neighborhoods. This presentation will be given by Lily Whitesell, Outreach and Watershed Programs Coordinator for the Northern Virginia Soil & Water Conservation District. She facilitates watershed education and projects, including storm drain education and other initiatives. Lily is also responsible for the NVSWCD website (http://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/nvswcd) and Conservation Currents, its newsletter (http://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/nvswcd/newsletter.htm).

Not all plants are equally beneficial for our streams and waterways. In fact, some are downright dangerous! Come hear about the impact that invasive non-native vines and plants can have on urban woodlands and water quality in Fairfax County (and the Chesapeake Bay watershed). Learn about the most common non-native invasive vines and plants found in our area (and where to send samples if identification is in doubt). Find out how you can make a difference in your own yard or as a community to preserve or restore urban woodlands and streams.

The membership boundaries for GWWCA can be viewed at http://www.gwwca.org/membership/membership/ , but all are welcomed to attend the meeting.
