Typhoon Haiyan Relief: How You Can Help

Several local and national organizations are collecting donations to help those affected by the typhoon, which swept through the Philippines on Friday.

With a confirmed death toll of 942 and an estimated 10,000 or more killed on Friday, Typhoon Haiyan (or Yolanda, as it’s referred to in the Phillippines) is being called one of the most powerful and deadliest natural disasters to hit Asia in recent decades.

Philippine President Benigno Aquino III declared a "state of national calamity" on Monday in order for the government to release emergency funds “to rehabilitate areas that were devastated by this typhoon” and impose “price controls on basic commodities and services” needed by those impacted.

There are a number of local and national organizations accepting online monetary donations to go toward relief efforts.

  1. Global Giving: The Washington, DC-based 501(c)3 organization is accepting donations for emergency disaster and long-term relief for victims. The organization plans to raise $90,000 for Typhoon Haiyan relief. Donations can be made online.
  2. Asia America Initiative: The Asia America Initiative (AAI) is sending food, clean water and medicine to help with typhoon relief efforts. They are accepting donations online, and according to their website, $20 will provide powdered milk and cereal to feed a family with three children for one week, $25 will send rice and canned fish to feed a family of five for one week, and $35 will provide water purification tablets and bottled water for one week.
  3. American Red Cross: In response to the typhoon, Red Cross is working with international Red Cross teams to send aid to the region. Red Cross has also activated family tracing services for those unable to reach their loved ones in the region, according to their website. Residents can make a donation online through the Red Cross website. There is a minimum donation of $10. 
  4. The United Nations World Food Programme: The World Food Programme provides emergency food assistance to families and children and recently sent 44 tons of High Energy Biscuits to Manila to feed 120,000 people for a day. Donations to the WFP’s relief efforts can be made online through their website.
  5. UNICEF: All donations to UNICEF will help provide medical supplies and clean drinking water to those affected by the typhoon. Donations are being accepted online.
  6. Oxfam: Oxfam is working to provide " clean water, safe sanitation and a roof over the heads" of those affected by the typhoon, according to their website. Residents can donate online.

The Embassy of the Philippines in Washington, DC also has a larger list of organizations the public can donate to to help with relief efforts.

Residents who are concerned with whether their financial donations will go directly to typhoon relief can use resources such as Charity Navigator and Better Business Bureau's (BBB) Wise Giving Alliance to do some research before donating.
