Last-Minute Gifts: Handmade Products That Benefit People With Disabilities

A Springfield-based nonprofit organization offers locally made scented products that benefit the people who make them.

If you're looking for a last-minute gift that gives back, a Northern Virginia nonprofit offers products that help support the people with disabilities who make them.

MVLE, a nonprofit organization based in Springfield, works with individuals with disabilities to provide meaningful employment opportunities and support services.

The organization sells scented floral products called Ability Nation Scentsations. The product line includes potpourri cubes, shoe fresheners and sachets — all handmade by local individuals with disabilities.

Packed in a signature cube, each fragrance mixture has its own theme, such as celebrate, hope or simplify. They are available at select Giant grocery stores and at Talk of the Town Gourmet Gifts & More, 7420 Fullerton Rd., Suite 106, in Springfield. They also can be purchased online or by contacting Sue Nesbit at (571) 431-8320 or sue@mvle.org.

MVLE, founded in 1971, works with people facing barriers to employment in the community. In 2010, MVLE began a new initiative, providing employment and support services to military veterans and wounded warriors as they return home.

MVLE partners with more than 125 commercial businesses in addition to government and other not-for-profit agencies. During 2013, MVLE supported more than 630 individuals with disabilities, with a commitment to creating futures, one person at a time.

More information on the Ability Nation program and its products can be found on the MVLE website.
