The map above shows a snapshot across Kingstowne of the number of grandparents living with their grandchildren under 18 years old. It's based on estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau.

The number of grandchildren living with their grandparents spiked during the Great Recession. It rose 6 percent between 2007 and 2008, partly because grandparents often served as a safety net for their families during hard economic times.

In 2011, one in 10 children were living with their grandparents, and nearly 20 percent of those households were living below the poverty line.

Also, some grandparents must use their fixed retirement income to help provide for their grandchildren, while only about a third qualify for government assistance to help them.

The data in this map are from the United States Census Bureau's 2011 American Community Survey. These values are an estimate for 2011 taking into account 60 months of collected data. You can learn more about the survey here.

Using your cursor, you can hover over any census tract – the geographic region defined by the U.S. Census – and see in the box in the upper right hand corner of the map the number of grandparents living with their grandchildren under 18 years old. The figures are estimates at absolute numbers.
