At 12 a.m. Saturday, Virginia State Police Trooper A.D. Jones was called to the scene of a three-vehicle crash in the southbound lanes of Interstate 95 at mile marker 168 (near the start of the exit ramp to Backlick Road) in Fairfax County.

The driver of a Mazda traveling south on I-95 ran off the right side of the interstate and struck an "impact attenuator" also known as a crash cushion, which caused the car to overturn, according to state police.

As it was overturning, it rolled back into the southbound lanes where it struck a Ford Focus. The impact of that crash caused the Ford Focus to strike a southbound tractor-trailer.

The driver of the Mazda died at the scene. The driver was the only occupant in the vehicle.

The driver and two passengers in the Ford Focus were not injured in the crash.

The driver of the tractor-trailer was not injured in the crash.

State police are still in the process of notifying the next of kin of the deceased driver. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
