Police Request Medical Records in Fatal Drunk Driving Trial

Joseph Shuttleworth has been charged with aggravated manslaughter in the death of Adrian Cardozo.

Police have requested the medical records of the defendant and victim in a trial related to a fatal February crash on Franconia Road. 

Joseph Shuttleworth, a Kingstowne resident at the time of the crash, is accused of aggravated manslaughter and driving while intoxicated.

According to police, Shuttleworth was driving eastbound on Franconia Road early on February 15 when his car  at the intersection of Franconia and Guilford Drive, near . While Shuttleworth sustained some injuries and was hospitalized, a passenger in the car, 21-year-old Adrian Cardozo, .

Fairfax County Police Department Detective Elizabeth Keevill filed search warrant requests on October 6 requesting both Cardozo and and Shuttleworth's medical records. According to one of the applications, Keevill is interested in whether Cardozo's death was caused by injuries sustained during the crash.

The crash was caused by speed and alcohol, according to Fairfax County police. Shuttleworth's blood alcohol content after the crash was allegedly 0.15, according to a blood analysis.

Shuttleworth's trial is scheduled for 10 a.m. on November 28, and is expected to last four days.
